Giveaway extended: Win a copy of “Wall and Piece” by Banksy!

Banksy

Are you a fan of graffiti, street/stencil art and Banksy? If yes, today is your lucky day – I will be giving away one copy of “Wall And Piece”, illustrated, commented album with Banksy’s greatest works – old and new. Here’s what Amazon has to say about the book:

Witty and subversive, his stencils show monkeys with weapons of mass destruction, policeman with smiley faces, rats with drills and umbrellas. If you look hard enough you’ll find your own. His statements, incitements, ironies and epigrams are by turns intelligent and cheeky comments on everything from the monarchy and capitalism to the war in Iraq and farm animals.

Sounds like fun? Now you can get your own copy of the book absolutely free from MariuszCiesla.com! More details after the jump.

New site of President of Poland goes “beta”

Before we start, I’d like to leave a small disclaimer, just in case: all the opinions in this post are my personal thoughts, not opinions of any companies I might be associated with, also I am not directly or indirectly associated with any local political party. Comments under the article are property of their respective authors and I can’t be held responsible for the opinions of my readers.

Polish blogs and news sites started the buzz about new site of President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski, going into a beta. Apparently, project (including hosting and maintenance) price was set somewhere around 300.000PLN, which is roughly 110k USD, not a small price for our local web design market. As a proud citizen of Poland and a designer, I felt like saying few words about the design and overall quality of the website.

When being (just) a designer is not enough

One of the problems with the current market is that being (just) a designer, in the meaning of ability of “drawing pretty pictures” is not enough if you want to be actually able to sell your stuff to someone. In this post I’ll try to round-up some skills modern designer needs to embrace if he wants a success in the market. With a ‘designer’ in this post I mean people who need to work with applied design, like industrial, print or web designers, but some of the points should work well for everyone. Anyway, here’s the list.

Free @font-face fonts you might want to use

I love letters, I love type. Even more due to the fact that I used to do graffiti and create my own letters from scratch. The biggest pain of the web so far is that the use of fonts is very limited, because there is basically no viable solution to show custom fonts on the web and every solution has its ups and downs. Due to this, web designers often stick to basics – Helvetica, Arial, Verdana, Trebuchet, Georgia and Times New Roman.

With wide CSS3 adaptation drawing near, @font-face becomes the weapon of choice for lots of web designers mostly because it’s easy and it just works. Foundries are not so happy with this solution, though, because it lets you download font from website just like you would download an image – and with licenses going up to thousands of dollars for a font family it means lots of money lost for typographers and foundries. Typekit with its .webfont proposal may be the way to go, but until it works and is widely adapted, we can try working with free fonts and @font-face in CSS. Here are few @font-face compatible fonts you might like to use in your next design.
